Tenuta Sant'Anna

One 140-hectare block where three provinces meet, a 92-point Extra Dry for about $15, and a Cartizze. The range, scores and prices.

Tenuta Sant'Anna

One block of vines, 140 hectares of it, at the corner where three provinces meet. Some Prosecco stories are about a hill. This one is about a horizon.

Loncon is a small place in the comune of Annone Veneto, in the province of Venice, and it sits almost exactly where the provinces of Venice, Treviso and Pordenone touch. Tenuta Sant'Anna's estate there covers 150 hectares. Of those, 140 are vineyard, planted in a single block with more than 600,000 vines. In a region where most families farm a few scattered hectares, that is a startling amount of Glera in one place.

The estate was founded in the 1960s. It was an early maker of single-varietal wines, and it moved into Prosecco spumante early, which in hindsight looks like very good judgment. The winery has an enoteca and tasting room on site.

The story

Sant'Anna's story is scale and place, and it is honest about both. Two independent sources describe it as part of Genagricola, the agricultural holding of the insurer Assicurazioni Generali, and Genagricola 1851 has its administrative office at the same address and phone number. The winery itself doesn't mention an owner, and Genagricola's own list of estates doesn't include it, so we report the link without overstating it. In 2010 the estate launched a sister brand, Ottopiù (V8+), which sells Prosecco DOC and DOCG under "Sior" names.

What scale buys you here is control. The estate runs ISO 9001 traceability, so a bottle can be followed back to its plot. It uses a decision-support system called HORTA to guide work in the vineyard, and it has held SQNPI certification, Italy's national sustainable-farming standard, since 2020.

The range climbs from the broad Prosecco DOC, the large appellation that covers the plains of the Veneto and Friuli, up to Valdobbiadene DOCG from the steep hills, and then to Cartizze. Cartizze is a single famous hill above Valdobbiadene, just over 100 hectares in all, and the closest thing Prosecco has to a grand cru.

What to drink

Prosecco DOC Extra Dry "Le Storie". The one critics keep finding. Remember that Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut: Bottle of Italy lists this at 12 to 17 g/l of sugar, with acacia, peach and pear blossom on the nose. Falstaff gave it 92 points in its 2022 Sparkling Special, and Wine Enthusiast scored the NV 87 in its issue of 31 December 2019, at $13. About €9.37 (reduced from €10.97) at Italian retailer Bottle of Italy (roughly $11). In the US, Station Plaza Wine lists it at $13.99 and SaratogaWine at $16.24, and Wine-Searcher's US average is about $15.

Prosecco DOC Brut "Le Storie". The drier version. Retailer copy describes green apple, pear and white flowers with a flinty touch. We found no price.

Prosecco DOC Millesimato Brut. Vintage-dated, meaning all the grapes come from one harvest. Falstaff scored the 2021 at 91. We found no price.

Prosecco DOC Rosé Millesimato Brut. A vintage-dated pink Prosecco. We found no price.

Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze DOCG Dry. The top of the range. "Dry" on a Prosecco label means sweeter than Extra Dry, which is the kind of logic only a Prosecco label could love. Falstaff gave the 2022 90 points. We found no price.

Prices: euro prices are what the winery or an Italian retailer charges, with a rough dollar figure at about $1.14 to the euro (October 2026). In the US, expect more on the shelf once shipping, the 15% tariff on EU wine, importer and distributor margins and taxes are added.

Where it fits

Next to the small hill families on this site, Sant'Anna is the opposite proposition: one vast, carefully monitored block, and wines that land on US shelves at around $15. That is its gift to the category. It puts a Falstaff 92-point Extra Dry within reach of anyone buying for a party. If you want a single hillside, Gemin's Rive wines are the other end of the scale. If you want both worlds in one cellar, Sant'Anna's Cartizze is the bridge.

Where to buy

  • US: the Extra Dry is listed at Station Plaza Wine and SaratogaWine. Wine.com has listed the Extra Dry and the Frizzante. We found no importer of record.
  • Italy: Bottle of Italy lists the Extra Dry.
  • UK: we found no retailer. The Extra Dry appears on the wholesale marketplace Faire with a recommended retail price of £12.80.

Visiting

The estate has an enoteca and tasting room at Loncon, but publishes no tour, price or booking page. Phone +39 0422 864 511 or email info@tenutasantanna.it before you go.
