The Rui family's cellar hides inside a hill at Rolle. Falstaff scores up to 94, a Decanter trophy, Rive di Rolle, and winery prices from €11.50.
| Vigne Matte |
A cellar you mostly can't see, a single-village Prosecco from Rolle, and a shelf of critics' scores.
The first thing to know about Vigne Matte's cellar is that it is mostly underground. The Rui family built it into the hillside at Rolle, a hamlet of Cison di Valmarino, so that only the ridge shows, and the winery describes the design as eco-sustainable. Giovanni Rui owns the estate and makes the wine. The name, the family says, refers to old vines growing among the boulders. When it all began depends on whom you ask: the winery dates the project to 1998, when it bought Casale Rosso in Rolle, while Decanter says 2004 and En Primeur Club says 2003. Sources differ; the vines don't seem to mind.

The story
Two pieces of label language explain this winery. Rive is the local word for a steep hillside slope, and on a Prosecco Superiore label it means the grapes come from one named hillside, with the vintage on the bottle. Vigne Matte's Rive di Rolle is a single-village wine: it puts Rolle itself on the label. Millesimato simply means vintage-dated, and the family uses it on several of its wines.
The awards came early. The producer lists a gold at Vinitaly in 2005 and a Gran Medaglia d'Oro in 2006. In 2014 the Decanter World Wine Awards gave the 2013 Extra Dry a Regional Trophy, best Veneto sparkling wine over £15. More recently Falstaff has scored the wines between 91 and 94 points, and named the Cuvée Brut its Trophy Prosecco in 2024 with 94 points.
That is a lot of paper for a family winery of about 35 hectares. It is also a useful thing for a reader in a hurry: when a wine shop puts one of these on a shelf, there is a critic behind it.
What to drink
The family publishes no sugar figures, so here is the code. Extra Brut is the driest of these styles. Brut is dry. Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut, and Dry is sweeter still. Nobody designing it today would do it that way.
Cuvée Brut, Valdobbiadene (DOCG). Falstaff gave it 94 points and named it Trophy Prosecco 2024. From €12.50 in the winery's shop (roughly $14).
Rive di Rolle Millesimato Brut (DOCG). The single-village wine. Falstaff gave the 2024 92 points. We found no separate shop price.
Extra Brut Millesimato (DOCG). The driest of the range. Falstaff gave the 2022 92 points, noting "juicy, lively acidity," and the 2023 91. From €13.00 (roughly $15).
Extra Dry Cuvée and Millesimatte Extra Dry Millesimato (DOCG). The softer style. An Extra Dry, the 2013, won the Decanter trophy in 2014. The producer describes Millesimatte's sweetness as "contained". From €12.50 (roughly $14) and €13.80 (roughly $16).
The shop also lists a DOCG Dry Millesimato from €12.50 (roughly $14), Rollino, a DOCG frizzante with gentler bubbles, at €11.50 (roughly $13), and two sparkling wines that are not Prosecco, 007 Riserva Brut and a Rosé Brut, at €13.80 (roughly $16).
Prices: euro prices are what the winery or an Italian retailer charges, with a rough dollar figure at about $1.14 to the euro (October 2026). In the US, expect more on the shelf once shipping, the 15% tariff on EU wine, importer and distributor margins and taxes are added.
Where it fits
If you like the idea of a wine named for one hill, Vigne Matte's Rive di Rolle is a cousin to Gemin's Rive di Santo Stefano: same idea, different hill. If you want a bone-dry bottle with a critic's score attached, the Extra Brut is the one. And if you just want to know what the fuss is about, the Cuvée Brut is the trophy winner, at €12.50 a bottle at the winery.
Where to buy
- At the winery: the full range, in the online shop and on site. Falstaff puts typical retail at €10 to €20.
- US and UK: we found no importer or retailer. If you know one, tell us.
