The Villa Di Maser prosecco

Palladio designed the house, Veronese painted the walls, and the cellar next door makes Asolo Prosecco.

Around 1560 two Venetian brothers, Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro, had Andrea Palladio build them a villa at Maser, in the province of Treviso. Paolo Veronese covered its rooms in frescoes. The house, Villa Barbaro, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto, and it is the reason most people find this page. Plenty of wineries put a villa on the label. This one has the genuine article, still lived in, with a working cellar beside it. Wine was in the plan from the start: in 1570 Palladio himself described wine-making rooms under the loggias.

The story

A house this lovely rarely stays with one family, and this one has had several. In 1850 the industrialist Sante Giacomelli bought the estate, and his family built the present cellar next to the villa. In 1934 Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata bought it for his daughter Marina, whose husband was Enrico Luling Buschetti. Marina's descendants still live there. Vittorio Dalle Ore, whose wife's grandfather made that 1934 purchase, owns and runs the winery, with Donato Lanati of the University of Turin directing the winemaking as consultant.

Now one piece of jargon, because it changes what you are buying. Most Prosecco on a shelf is DOC, from a big zone spread across the Veneto and Friuli. The hill country gets the stricter DOCG, and there are two of them: Conegliano Valdobbiadene, where most of the families in this directory work, and Asolo, where this one does. The winery has used the Asolo Prosecco Superiore DOCG name since 2010. Before that its wines came under the older Montello e Colli Asolani DOC. And Maser is not Asolo, whatever the label suggests: Asolo names the hills and the denomination, while Maser is its own comune at their foot.

The estate is planted at high density and grows red and white grapes as well as Glera, so the two Proseccos share the cellar with still whites, reds and a late-harvest Verduzzo. Both Proseccos come from three named vineyards, Cason, Casera de Mezo and Ote. Both are made by the Charmat method, with the second fermentation in a pressurised tank, and both rest four to six months on their fine lees before bottling. We like that the sparkling wine here is treated as a wine with an address, not a souvenir.

What to drink

Asolo Prosecco Superiore Brut (DOCG). 10 to 12 g/l of sugar, which is the top of the Brut range: dry, but not severe. The producer describes golden apple and suggests it with appetisers, shellfish and steamed fish. €11.39 in the winery's online shop (roughly $13).

Asolo Prosecco Superiore Extra Dry (DOCG). 15 to 17 g/l. Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut, one of the small comedies of Prosecco labelling, so this is the softer of the pair and the one for an aperitivo. The producer calls it fruity and refined, with a delicate perlage, which is the trade's word for the bubbles. The 2020 is reported to have won gold at the Berliner Wine Trophy in 2022; we have not seen the medal list ourselves. €11.39 in the winery's shop (roughly $13).

The estate's still wines, including that late-harvest Verduzzo, are there for anyone who stays for lunch.

Prices: euro prices are what the winery or an Italian retailer charges, with a rough dollar figure at about $1.14 to the euro (October 2026). In the US, expect more on the shelf once shipping, the 15% tariff on EU wine, importer and distributor margins and taxes are added.

Where it fits

Villa di Maser is the easy way to taste the other DOCG. If you have been drinking Valdobbiadene from Gemin or Zucchetto, these two wines show you what Asolo does with the same grape. At €11.39 a bottle at the cellar door, they are also gentle on the wallet for DOCG. Choose the Brut for the table and the Extra Dry for the hour before it. Come for Palladio, by all means. Leave with a case.

Where to buy

  • At the winery: both Proseccos, in the online shop and on site.
  • US and UK: we found no importer or retailer. If you know one, tell us.
