Val de Cune

Gregorio Marsura bought a vineyard in a corner of Guia called Val de Cune, between the two world wars. His grandchildren still make the wine in the same building.

Guia is a hamlet in the hills of Valdobbiadene, and Val de Cune is a locality inside it, small enough that you could miss it if the family hadn't put it on a label. Sometime between the two world wars, Gregorio Marsura, known in the family as "Marsuret", bought his first vineyard there. With his sons, Giovanni and Agostino, he began making sparkling Prosecco fermented in the bottle.

The winery is still in the original building, on Via Spinade in Guia. The third generation runs it: Valter, Marina, Sara and Andrea Marsura. It is a family-sized operation, up to 150,000 bottles a year, with four Marsuras now sharing the work.

The story

First, the name, because it causes trouble. Val de Cune is not Val d'Oca, the brand of the Cantina Produttori di Valdobbiadene co-operative. One is a family in Guia named after a corner of their village; the other is a co-op label. Say them out loud and you will see why the internet mixes them up.

What the Marsuras have, more than most small families, is reach. Their vineyards run from Cartizze, Prosecco's most famous hill, across Valdobbiadene, Guia and Follo, then east to Miane, Rolle, Cison di Valmarino and Follina. That is a long stretch of the DOCG for a family winery, and we like the idea of one cellar drawing on so many villages.

A word on the letters. DOCG is the top tier of Prosecco, from the steep hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. DOC covers a much larger zone on the plain. Everything Val de Cune makes is DOCG. Cartizze is the small hill above Valdobbiadene, just over 100 hectares, that sits at the top of the pyramid with its own DOCG.

The range comes in three lines. The Valdobbiadene DOCG wines are the core. The Val de Cune line carries the name of the founder's vineyard. And there is the Selezione del Valter, which shares its name with the Marsura who helps run the winery today. The producer does not publish sugar figures or tasting notes, so the label words do the talking.

What to drink

Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze Dry (DOCG). Cartizze in the Dry style. On a Prosecco label "Dry" is sweeter than both Brut and Extra Dry, so this sits at the softer, sweeter end. Cartizze is often bottled that way. We found no price.

Valdobbiadene DOCG Extra Brut, Brut and Extra Dry. The core line, from driest to softest. Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut, a rule that confuses everyone once. The Brut and Extra Dry also come in magnum. We found no euro price.

Val de Cune Brut, Extra Dry and Millesimato Dry. The line named after the founder's corner of Guia. Millesimato means the wine carries a vintage year. No price found.

Selezione del Valter Dry. Another Dry, also in magnum. No price found.

The "VAL", Valdobbiadene DOCG. This is the one US readers are most likely to meet. VinePair's Keith Beavers gave a non-vintage "VAL" Valdobbiadene DOCG at 11.5% 90 points in February 2022, at US$19, and noted "pear, candied fruit, baking spice". There is also a Rosé.

Prices: euro prices are what the winery or an Italian retailer charges, with a rough dollar figure at about $1.14 to the euro (October 2026). In the US, expect more on the shelf once shipping, the 15% tariff on EU wine, importer and distributor margins and taxes are added.

Where it fits

Guia has good company. Gemin makes its Madre Paola from the Rive di Guia, also in the Dry style, so the two make a neat pair from the same village. For Cartizze, put Val de Cune's Dry beside Zucchetto's, which has almost no sugar at all. Same hill, opposite ends of the sweetness ladder.

Where to buy

  • US: VinePair listed the "VAL" at $19, so it has reached the US, but we found no importer or retailer. If you know one, tell us.
  • Europe and UK: we found no shop or retailer listing. The winery is the surest source.

Visiting

The winery is open to the public Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 18:30, and on Saturday from 8:30 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, according to prosecco.it. The family speaks English, Spanish and German. No tasting format or price is published, so call +39 0423 901112 or email info@valdecune.it before you go.
