Valdo

Founded in Valdobbiadene in 1926, run by the Bolla family since 1938. Why Marca Oro differs in the US and Italy, plus Cartizze, scores and prices.

Valdo

One of Valdobbiadene's big houses, run by the Bolla family since 1938, and a flagship that changes style when it crosses the Atlantic.

In 1926 a group of entrepreneurs in Valdobbiadene set up a company with a very serious name, Società Anonima Vini Superiori. Twelve years later, in 1938, Sergio Bolla bought out his partners and the business became a family one. The Bollas were not new to wine. The family's roots go back to a tavern in Soave, in 1883, on the other side of the Veneto. A family that started out pouring for thirsty locals and ended up shipping millions of bottles is, we think, the most Prosecco story there is.

The name Valdo came later; sources differ on whether it was 1941 or 1951, and we will let the family settle that over dinner. Today Pierluigi Bolla is president, chairman and chief executive, and we found no outside group behind the company. Where big names often belong to bigger companies, that independence is worth a nod.

The story

Valdo's flagship is Marca Oro, gold brand, launched in 1958. Here is what every American Prosecco drinker should know. In the US, Marca Oro is sold as a Prosecco DOC Brut. In Italy it is a Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Extra Dry. Same name, different wine. DOC is the large Prosecco area across the Veneto and Friuli; DOCG is the smaller zone of steep hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. And Extra Dry, despite its name, is sweeter than Brut. If you have only had the American one, you have met the cousin.

Valdo also claims to have brought the cuvée, a deliberate blend of vineyards and grapes, to Prosecco in the 1980s. That is the company's claim, and we report it as one. The range certainly reads like a house that likes to experiment: a Prosecco with a splash of Chardonnay and brief skin contact, a traditional-method sparkler, a Cartizze aged on its lees.

Valdo buys grapes from about 70 growers, according to one retailer profile. On these hills plenty of families grow grapes without ever bottling a wine of their own, and houses like Valdo are where their work ends up in a glass.

What to drink

Marca Oro Valdobbiadene DOCG Extra Dry (Italy). The producer describes it as easy and slim-bodied, slightly sweet, with apple, acacia and honey. Falstaff gave it 91 points. €8.30 at the Italian retailer vino.com (roughly $9). In the US, Buy Wines Online lists the Marca Oro Brut (the DOC version) at $14.95.

Cuvée di Boj DOCG Brut. Our pick. It comes from the Valle dei Buoi, the valley of the oxen, at San Pietro di Barbozza, and the producer describes pear and golden apple. The producer shows a 2020 Falstaff trophy at 93 points, and Falstaff scored it 93 again in an October 2025 tasting. €10.00 at vino.com (roughly $11).

Cuvée 1926 DOCG Extra Dry. 90% Glera and 10% Chardonnay, with brief skin contact. It won Silver and 90 points at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021, according to the producer. €10.20 at vino.com (roughly $12).

Cuvée Viviana, Superiore di Cartizze Dry. Named for the founder's wife and aged four months on its lees. Cartizze is the most famous hill in Prosecco, and Dry is sweeter again than Extra Dry. €15.40 at vino.com (roughly $18), which is a low price for Cartizze.

Numero 10 Metodo Classico DOCG Brut. Fermented in the bottle like Champagne, with at least ten months on the lees, according to Vinepair. €14.70 at vino.com (roughly $17).

Prices: euro prices are what the winery or an Italian retailer charges, with a rough dollar figure at about $1.14 to the euro (October 2026). In the US, expect more on the shelf once shipping, the 15% tariff on EU wine, importer and distributor margins and taxes are added.

Where it fits

Valdo is a big Valdobbiadene house that still answers to one family. If you know Marca Oro from an American shelf, the next step is the Cuvée di Boj, a hillside Brut that shows the DOCG side of the company. Next to smaller growers such as Gemin, also in Valdobbiadene, Valdo is the dependable name you will find almost anywhere; Gemin is the small family you go looking for.

Where to buy

  • US: imported by C. Mondavi & Family. Marca Oro Brut is listed at Buy Wines Online.
  • Europe: vino.com lists most of the range, including the Elevantum Rosé DOC at €9.80 (roughly $11).
  • UK: we found no importer. If you know one, tell us.

Visiting
