Valdoc Sartori

Three generations of Sartoris on the steep slopes of Santo Stefano. Brut Nature to Extra Dry, a spring demijohn sale, and tours by appointment.

Valdoc Sartori Prosecco
Valdoc Sartori

A three-generation family in Santo Stefano that farms the steep slopes, makes its Prosecco all the way down to zero sugar, and still sells wine by the demijohn every spring.

Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene is a village of steep hills and short drives, and the Sartori family has farmed its slopes for more than fifty years. Their winery is on Strada Menegazzi. The founder was Arduino, the grandfather. His son Massimiliano followed, and today the third generation, Alberto and Matteo, run it. Every grape comes from the family's own land.

A quick word on the name, because search engines are confused even if you are not. Valdoc Sartori is not Valdo, the big Valdobbiadene house, and it is not Sartori di Verona, the wine house from Verona. It is a small grower in Santo Stefano with a name that happens to rhyme with two famous ones.

The story

The vineyards sit on the steep slopes the locals call rive. You will also see "Rive" on some Prosecco labels, where it is an official category for a single named hillside with a vintage. The Sartoris don't use it as a label, but the word describes their land, and the family has stayed on it for half a century.

What makes the range interesting is how far it runs. The Sartoris start at Brut Nature, which has no added sugar at all, then go through Extra Brut, Brut and Extra Dry. Here the jargon matters, so a quick guide. Brut Nature is the driest. Extra Brut is next, then Brut. Extra Dry, confusingly, is sweeter than Brut, and the softest wine in this line-up. If you remember one thing, remember that on a Prosecco label "dry" is a relative term.

Then there are the two styles most visitors never meet. The frizzante is lightly sparkling, with gentler bubbles than spumante. The tranquillo is still Prosecco, no bubbles at all, which is what Glera tastes like with nothing to hide behind.

The family holds SQNPI certification, Italy's national standard for sustainable integrated farming. And each spring, from the last Sunday of February, they sell their wine sfuso: 100% Glera at 10.5%, in demijohns or bag-in-box, for people to bottle at home. It's a local tradition, and we wish more wineries kept it.

What to drink

Valdobbiadene DOCG Brut Nature. Zero dosage, the driest wine they make. Zero-sugar Prosecco from a small family grower is still uncommon, in our view, and it is the bottle we would look for first. The producer gives no tasting notes and we found no price.

Valdobbiadene DOCG Extra Brut and Brut. The middle of the ladder: dry, with a little more give in the Brut. No price found.

Valdobbiadene DOCG Extra Dry. The softest of the spumanti, and the classic aperitivo style. No price found.

Frizzante and Tranquillo. The lightly sparkling and the still versions of Valdobbiadene DOCG. Good for anyone who wants to taste the grape rather than the fizz. No price found.

Vino sfuso. The spring wine for home bottling, 100% Glera at 10.5%. Bring your own enthusiasm.

The producer describes the whole range only as made from carefully selected grapes. It publishes no sugar figures, so the label word is your guide.

Prices: euro prices are what the winery or an Italian retailer charges, with a rough dollar figure at about $1.14 to the euro (October 2026). In the US, expect more on the shelf once shipping, the 15% tariff on EU wine, importer and distributor margins and taxes are added.

Where it fits

Valdoc Sartori is a grower's grower: no shop, no export we could find, and wine sold at the cellar door and by the demijohn. If you are in Santo Stefano, it sits naturally next to Gemin, whose Pioniere comes from the Rive di Santo Stefano. Taste a Sartori Brut Nature beside it and you get two families' answers to the same steep hill.

Where to buy

  • At the winery: the only place we found. There is no online shop.
  • US and UK: we found no importer or retailer. If you know one, tell us.

Visiting

The family offers cellar and vineyard visits with a tasting, for groups of 2 to 15, in English. Booking is recommended, and Veneto Around Me names Alberto Sartori as the contact. No price is published. Opening hours vary by source: the producer and prosecco.it give different times, so call +39 0423 900278 or email info@valdocsartori.it before you set off.

Quick answers

Is Valdoc Sartori the same as Valdo? No. Valdo is a much larger Valdobbiadene house. Valdoc Sartori is a family grower in Santo Stefano, and it is not connected with Sartori di Verona either.

What is Brut Nature Prosecco? Prosecco with no added sugar, the driest style there is. Valdoc Sartori makes one in Valdobbiadene DOCG.

Can you buy wine by the demijohn at Valdoc Sartori? Yes. From the last Sunday of February the family sells 100% Glera in demijohns or bag-in-box for bottling at home.
